Escape to Thailand at Sheva Thai Spa Express

Sheva Thai Spa

I love foot massages! Working on my feet in retail and performing facials definitely takes a toll on my body. So I jumped at the opportunity to try out the services at the Sheva Thai Spa Express in New York City.

Sheva Thai Spa Express is a luxurious haven for the busy professional looking for a facial, manicure, pedicure, massage, even waxing, in the middle of midtown Manhattan. The menu reads like a typical salon/spa–facials, massage, foot treatments, mani/pedis, and waxing. Once you walk into the doors, the spa is anything but.

I indulged in Sheva’s Nam Foot Treatment, a 30-minute foot massage consisting of a Thai foot soak, massage and reflexology. Upon entering the changing area, I was transported back to my trip to Bangkok years ago!

Good times!
Good times!

Upon entrance, I removed my pants and shoes in their changing room, which is encased in glass. Thankfully there were curtains. I was handed flip-flops, an iPod, and an eye cover.

My goodies!

The hostess carried my belongings to their closet and lead me to their pedicure chair for my treatment. My massage therapist brought over a combination of sea salts and essential oils and a water basin for the treatment.

I dropped the iPod in the water by accident, which wasn’t the best way to start! It took a while to get present again, but once she got into the massage, I was in la la land!

The best part was the wooden massage stick, about 6 inches long, which is used to target each pressure point on the foot and relieve muscle tension. Using this tool also alleviates the thumbs for the therapist.

The experience was euphoric–all 30 minutes of it! For $55, you can escape in a little Thai palace to alleviate the foot pains from walking the concrete jungle in NYC. For $147 per month, you can enjoy unlimited Nam foot treatments!

Spring has sprung–the flowers will be in bloom, the days are longer, and DISCOUNTED SPA TREATMENTS ARE HERE!

Spa Week 2016 will take place April 11-17, where spas nationwide will offer full-service, premium treatments for $50 only! Who doesn’t love treating themselves and spending some me-time? Especially on a discount?

This season, the creators of Spa Week focused on delivering services that will help relieve physical stress from using technology on a daily basis. Whether it’s aching wrists from texting on the phone, to shoulder pain from a laptop–or for my case, back pain from doing so many facials!– there is a treatment for you.

SpaWeek-featuredimage

Haven Spa in New York City offers a unique Geek Massage (Reg. $100, Spa Week $50) that was created to address and relieve the ailments that are created from hours of computer usage. Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas nationwide are offering a De-Stress Body Treatment (Reg. $255, Spa Week $50) including exfoliation, an aromatherapeutic body wrap and a relaxing scalp massage to melt stress away and rebalance your spirit. Hundreds more spas and wellness centers around the country will be offering similar services to alleviate the winter blues and prepare you for the summer!

Also, as an esthetician myself, I must mention to PLEASE TIP YOUR ESTHETICIAN/MASSAGE THERAPIST/SERVICE PROVIDER! Tip according to the original price of the service–normally 15-20%. Many spas are participating in Spa Week to bring in customers, sometimes at the cost of the esthetician’s check. I love my job, and I put in 100%, no matter whether the client is paying full or 50% of my price. That’s why I can’t wait to have treat myself to these services myself!

Register on SpaWeek.com to gain access to all these deals and book online. Since this is only ONE WEEK, appointments will book up quickly at these locations.

Spa Week was created and founded by Cheryl Reid, who hails from successful careers within the luxury spa industry and publishing spheres. Joining Spa Week for the Spring 2016 Event, sponsors include Exclusive Destination Sponsor: Sandals; Exclusive Cosmetics Sponsor: Hynt Beauty; Exclusive Apparel Sponsor: Yummie by Heather Thomson; Exclusive Trade Association Partner: International Spa Association (ISPA). Co-Founder of Butter London Wows in Commencement Speech

Every commencement speech always makes me feel like a new graduate, ready to take over the world.

Nonie Creme, beautypreneur & co-founder of nail brand butter London, definitely made me feel that way!

nonie-creme-graduation

After 20 years, Nonie Creme returned to her alma mater, Scripps College, to give this class of the inspiration they needed after obtaining that “hard-won degree.” It was even more inspirational that the speech was being delivered by a straight-C student who sucked at painting! Ultimately, this student ended up with her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree and then built a $20 million beauty enterprise.

WOW!

The road was not easy for this artist. After graduation, she moved to London into a cramped apartment and made her living as a manicurist, booking appointments in the subway station with “Wall Street types…cash only.”

Those desk side manicures would lead to meeting an agent and working on fashion shoots with models like Kate Moss, and then becoming Moss’ personal manicurist. Before she knew it, Nonie was being quoted in Vanity Fair on the latest nail trends. What made her stand out from the mani-pack?

“It was because I was well-educated. I was an artist. I could speak to my trade with authority and in a voice they could relate to.”

Thanks to her art major classes, her talent on mixing nail colors create a demand to start her own line. That’s when the adventure began. Creme left her home, husband, and career to move back to the States into a cramped basement apartment to start the famed product line with her business partner, Sasha Muir. At 34, most people would be in the peak of their careers, not leaving one to start a new venture from scratch.

From creating custom formulations, to working on marketing concepts, and then being the face of the brand–Creme’s plate was full. “I have never worked that hard in my life,” Creme said, “and I pray that I’ll never have to again.”

After leaving butter LONDON in 2012, Creme is now working on a brand new beauty line, Colour Prevails, launching January 2015. She has collaborated with TPR Holdings, an investor and operator in the consumer products industry. The range will include SKUs in nail, eye, lip, cheek and hair categories.

You can watch the rest of the speech here:

If 20 minutes is a bit long to watch, I’ve pulled my favorite quotes:
  • Many people ask after receiving that hard won degree, “What are you gonna do with that?” The correct answer is “anything I want!”
  • You are not defined by your major or the classes you’ve excelled in. It is merely a jumping off point.
  • I’m sorry to tell you, but you’re going to have to work really bloody hard to succeed!
  • I learned to listen to myself and trust that if I was happy, the only measure of success that mattered was my own.
  • Enjoy yourselves, do things that you enjoy – don’t worry about the money. I’m going to let you in on a little secret: Money is only actually fun if you’re already happy.
  • When advising on what qualities are required to land your dream job, she says “the single most important skill you can take into the next phase of your life is resourcefulness. First of all, you have each other, and you will continue to call on one another for advice, connections, and support for the rest of your lives.”
And my ultimate favorite: “the only measure of success that matters is your own. Knowing that, you simply CAN’T fail.”

I can’t end without sharing my own graduation photo!

Full Recap & Video: Beauty FUN-Raiser for the Philippines

Last February, I hosted a Beauty FUN-raiser for the Philippines. Although it was 3 months ago, I hadn’t completely tied off all the loose ends. The last step was finally editing the video from the event, since my videographer couldn’t do it due to other projects.

As I completed the credits portion of the video, I was floored at how many people truly played a huge role in supporting this project. It was stretch for me in enrolling others in my vision, recreating my relationships, and also being at the helm of such an endeavor.

Here’s the video & press recap:

BEAUTY BLOGGER HOSTS FUNDRAISER TO AID RELIEF EFFORTS IN THE PHILIPPINES

May 26, 2014 – NEW YORK, NY – Genevieve A. Santos, a makeup artist and beauty blogger, hosted an interactive night of makeovers and spa treatments to benefit the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The official recap video for The Beauty FUN-Raiser Happy Hour is now available for viewing online on YouTube at http://youtu.be/MrWHlk43AeU.

A total of $1,350 was raised from ticket sales, personal donations, and raffle tickets with over $1,000 worth of prizes. The funds were donated to The Handang Tumulong Foundation, who sent the funds to the Build a Shelter Project to aid in the reconstruction of several provinces in Leyte.

The event took place on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Nirvana NY, a bar/restaurant in near Grand Central Terminal. Guests indulged in professional makeovers, hand treatment & massages from Spadet, a Filipina-owned skincare line. A musical performance was given by singer/songwriters Lindsey Wilson & Jasmine Holloway, with actress/comedian Addy Diaz as emcee.

Gift bag sponsors included Avon, Garnier, Shea Moisture, and On Makeup Magazine. Raffle prizes consisted of numerous product bundles from Essie Nails, L’Oreal, Maybelline New York, Motives Cosmetics, Arbonne, Mary Kay and indie brands Armour Beauty, Breakups to Makeup, Imena Salon, and Alcone.

The event was produced by Genevieve Santos, a beauty expert and founder of 360beautymaven.com & gorgeousonthego.com. She was inspired to create this event after taking her own trip to the Philippines in 2013 and vacationing only a few miles away from the islands that were devastated from the typhoon.

“As a first generation Filipina American, I wasn’t as connected with my roots until I visited the Philippines after 15 years. By sharing my own passion for beauty as a makeup artist, I’m able to help women enhance their beauty and contribute to my country at the same time,” said Genevieve.

In November 2013, the southern coast of the Philippines was struck by Typhoon Haiyan, the most deadliest typhoon on record, killing at least 6,000 people, and affecting 12 million people across 6 islands. While recovery efforts have been hopeful, there’s still more to be done.
